It is one of our oldest cultural techniques: the making of our clothes. People were spinning and weaving as early as the Bronze Age. Wool, silk and fine cloth were important economic factors in the Middle Ages, making countries like England rich. From the 17th century, English ships brought large quantities of raw cotton from India and the American colonies to Liverpool, Bristol and Glasgow. Now machines were doing the spinning and weaving, factories and fast transport routes were built. The ‘spinning mills’ became the driving force behind the Industrial Revolution.
